Getting to know the people behind FLI Water

At FLI Water, our people are central to how we operate and deliver for our clients. In our latest employee spotlight, we caught up with Sharon O’Connor, Head of SHEQ, to learn more about what she enjoys about life at FLI Water, what drives her outside work and the journey that helped shape her career as an environmentalist.

What do you like most about working at FLI Water?

“The people, the variety and the opportunity to make a real difference. No two days are ever the same, which is both the best part and occasionally the reason I need strong coffee.”

Describe FLI Water in one word.

“Resilient.”

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside work?

“Healthy living, keeping active, broadcasting and talking about business and environmental issues. Apparently, talking for hours now counts as a hobby.”

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

“Sir David Attenborough. I would love to hear his stories, and discuss why humanity has taken so long to read the environmental risk assessment.”

If you could teleport anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

“The Algarve. Sunshine, and sea air.”

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

“Fresh grilled fish, colourful Mediterranean vegetables and a large salad. Healthy, delicious and enough variety to stop me rebelling by day three.”

What hobby would you love to start if you had all the resources and time?

“I would travel by camper van and retrace the journey I made in my early twenties, when I spent two years travelling from Ireland to North Cyprus and back through Eastern Europe.

“That adventure shaped my career as an environmentalist. This time, I would return as a broadcaster, capturing the people, environmental changes and stories along the way, hopefully with better navigation and fewer mechanical breakdowns.”

What is one thing you can’t live without?

“Good conversation. Preferably accompanied by sunshine.”
