Bio-Chip Media

High-Performance Biofilm Carrier for Superior Wastewater Treatment

Product Overview

FLI Water’s Bio-Chip Media, featuring the Mutag BioChip, is a sector-leading biofilm carrier designed for high-performance biological treatment in wastewater applications. With an available specific surface area exceeding 3,200 m²/m³, Bio-Chip Media provides an optimal environment for biofilm development, ensuring efficient treatment processes. The engineered pore structure and optimised thickness of the BioChip allow for active biofilm across the entire surface area, making it ideal for a wide range of applications, from high-strength industrial waste treatment to tertiary polishing.

Mutag BioChip Media is independently certified (BINAS) and boasts over 700 reference sites worldwide, proving its effectiveness in COD/BOD and ammonia removal.

Applications:

  • COD/BOD Removal: Effectively reduces chemical and biological oxygen demand in wastewater treatment processes.
  • MBBR and IFAS Systems: Optimised for use in Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) systems.
  • Nitrification: Supports efficient ammonia removal, critical for meeting stringent environmental regulations.
  • Industrial and Tertiary Applications: Suitable for both high-strength industrial waste treatment and tertiary polishing applications.
  •    Ideal for both new installations and upgrading existing treatment plants, enabling simple and effective performance improvements.

Key Information:

Sector-Leading Surface Area:

  • Available Specific Surface Area >3,200²/m³: Provides extensive surface area for biofilm growth, ensuring high treatment efficiency.

Engineered Pore Structure:

  • Optimised Thickness for Diffusion Depth: All biofilm is active, maximising treatment performance.
  • Protection for Biofilm: Structure provides shelter for biofilm, preventing clogging and ensuring consistent operation.

Key Benefits

  • Reduced Mixing Energy: The round paraboloid shape and near neutral buoyancy when colonised   ensures efficient mixing with minimal energy consumption.
  • Lower Media and Tank Volumes: Requires lower volumes of media and tank space, reducing overall system footprint.
  • Wear Resistant: Durable with no significant changes in size or weight, even after more than 10 years of operation.
  • Non-Clogging Design: Excess biomass is easily removed by shear forces, maintaining optimal performance.
  • Protective Outer Ring: Enhances durability and longevity, ensuring long-term reliability in demanding environments.
